VIEW THE MORRIS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE FROM FOLLY BEACH
The Morris Island Lighthouse is a spectacular must-see on Folly Beach. And don't forget to grab your camera. Built in 1876, it is the second oldest lighthouse in South Carolina. And, at 158 feet it’s one of the tallest you’ll find in South Carolina. Having been retired and restored only a few years back, it is now a historic landmark and great photography location.
FUN AT THE FOLLY BEACH FISHING PIER
The Pier on Folly Beach is iconic. In the 1940s, the Pier hosted many big bands including Glenn Miller and Maurice Williams. It's just 5 blocks from Lamm's End Cottage which just happened to be constructed in the 40s. Imagine if the walls could talk! Stretching a half-mile into the ocean, the pier is not only popular with anglers. Birdwatchers are captivated by migrating flocks of birds and if for those who enjoy sunrises and sunsets, this is a must-see on Folly Beach.
SOAK UP SUN & FUN ON FOLLY BEACH
Folly Beach is considered by many to be the hippest beach in South Carolina. The surf and sand are hugely popular with surfers, young families, and retired boomers. No matter the age or stage of life, tee shirts, shorts, and flip flops are the dress code on Folly!
STROLL SHOPS & RESTAURANTS ON CENTER STREET
Center Street on Folly Beach is just a short stroll from Lamm's End Cottage. It's lined with casual shops, restaurants, and bars. Several times a year the street is blocked for various festivals. Be sure to visit some of the Lamm Family's favorite haunts including "The Lost Dog Cafe" for breakfast, "Rita's" for live music and outdoor dining, "Snapper Jack's Roof Top" for a cocktail and a great view of the ocean and "Taco Boy" for some fabulous fish tacos.
JAMES ISLAND COUNTY PARK
James Island County Park is just a few miles from Lamm's End Cottage on Folly Beach. The annual Holiday Festival of Lights at Christmas is spectacular with over 4-million lights on display and a magnificent Christmas village. The 50-foot climbing wall at the park features 4,500 square feet of climbing and 14 challenging ropes. The 600 plus acre park offers an abundance of opportunities to enjoy all that mother nature offers and is only a few miles from Folly Beach and downtown Charleston.
KAYAKING IN CHARLESTON
Kayaking the low country of Folly Beach and the surrounding islands of Charleston is magical, to say the least. Seasoned kayak and paddle boarders will appreciate the challenge of the tides and the meandering tidal marsh. First-timers can also enjoy the experience with many professional local guides. It is not uncommon to encounter a friendly dolphin trailing the wake of your kayak. Magic! It’s no surprise that kayaking in Charleston SC can be a lot of fun. I’m learning to appreciate lots of things about the low country that I didn’t appreciate (or know) before. For several years now, Charleston has been topping the “Best Of” charts for US travel destinations. Luckily, I’m married to a native and get to enjoy visiting family any time of the year, off the typical tourist path.
EATING OUT IN CHARLESTON
The restaurant scene in Charleston rivals that of many major American cities. Southern cuisine; including shrimp & grits, cornbread, fried green tomatoes, and She crab soup; is widely available and yes it is delish! Charleston's repertoire is much broader than just southern fare. Hall's Steakhouse on upper King is as good as it gets and has been consistently recognized as the nation's top steakhouse. Other stand-outs for Beth Lamm and her fam are the French eateries of Maison and Chez Nous. Have a hankering for Asian soul food? Try Xiao Bao Biscuit. The farm-to-table movement is huge in Charleston. FIG on Meeting is known for innovative creations with locally produced veggies. One could eat out every night for a year and not repeat a single restaurant in the region!
VISITING IN CHARLESTON
Historic Charleston is just 11-miles from Lamm's End Cottage on Folly Beach. This small, southern gem boasts more restaurants per square inch than many large cities. Foodies are not disappointed! The art/gallery scene is also impressive. The Holy City's 400-year old historic architecture is unmatched. Gorgeous antebellum mansions line the battery. Horse-drawn carriage rides are a wonderful way to explore Charleston.
